For Immediate Release
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, at approximately 12:51 a.m., an 88-year-old male inmate at the Alpena County Jail experienced a medical emergency and subsequently passed away.
Correctional Deputies responded to a disturbance in the inmate’s cell and escorted him to another area of the facility. During the escort, the individual collapsed. Deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR and the use of an AED. Emergency medical services were called to assist, but all efforts to revive the inmate were unsuccessful.
An investigation is underway and pending the results of an autopsy. Preliminary findings suggest a medical event may have contributed to the incident. Upon conclusion of the investigation, the Michigan Sheriff’s Association will conduct an independent quality assurance review.
The Alpena County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the family of the deceased.
